It is a variety of smoked dried chili with medium spiciness (15,000 - 23,000 SHU). Its name is often associated with chipotle chili since both are derived from a dried jalapeño chili but with different flavor notes and a dark reddish color. They are primarily produced in the central region of Mexico and used in the preparation of moles and sauces.
