It is a variety of dried chili that comes from a darker variety of fresh poblano chili, which, when dried, acquires a deep brownish-red color like chocolate. It is very similar to the Ancho chili but comes from different genes, which make it mature with a unique color, besides being smaller and having a darker color. It has low spiciness (2,500 - 5,000 SHU) and is produced in areas of Mexico such as Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Chihuahua. This chili has a sweet and chocolaty flavor.
